The most important part of any fertility treatment is to produce good quality eggs and sperm.
Naturally, the better the quality and vitality of eggs and sperm, the greater the potential for fertilisation and development into good embryos. The ageing process and lifestyle affects the whole of the body including the eggs and sperm. In Chinese medicine terms, it is the energy of the Kidney and specifically what we call Kidney Jing that is responsible for the quality and vitality of the eggs and sperm.
Kidney Jing is the essence of a person and the closest description in western medical terms is DNA or the genetic inheritance from our parents but Jing is much more than that. Kidney Yin energy nurtures the development of the eggs and sperm and Kidney Yang energy fuels the release of the egg from the ovary (ovulation)and sperm motility. All these aspects of the reproductive cycle can be enhanced by Chinese medicine.
For Assisted Reproduction Technology (ART) procedures, acupuncture used in combination at the appropriate times with herbs, has been shown in studies to increase the number of viable pregnancies.
